The SHARE BERLIN Institute GmbH (SBI) is the German headquarters of the central coordination of the international survey project Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), the SHARE-European Research Infrastructure Consortium (SHARE-ERIC) and the associated scientific research. The non-profit organisation was founded in 2022 by the Social Science Research Centre Berlin (WZB), the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the German Centre of Gerontology (DZA) with the aim of advancing pioneering interdisciplinary research that combines socio-economic and biomedical approaches with a European perspective.

SHARE is a study founded in 2004 to analyse the impact of health, social, economic and environmental policies on the life course of European citizens and beyond. With more than 160,000 respondents from 28 countries, SHARE is the largest interdisciplinary panel study and one of the largest European research infrastructures in Europe. Through the accredited SHARE Research Data Centre (FDZ-SHARE), SHARE already provides over 20,000 registered users worldwide with internationally comparable socio-economic and biomedical longitudinal microdata for scientific research. Since 2011, SHARE has also had the legal form of a European Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC).

We are now seeking a motivated individual to join our team in an international and academically stimulating environment. We are offering an interesting and varied role with the opportunity to make a significant impact.

Head of Finance (f/m/d)

full-time (39 hours per week), to start as soon as possible, initially limited until August 2027 with prospective for contractual renewal.

This position plays a central role in the financial management of the organisation. Responsibility covers both the operational oversight of finance and its ongoing development within a dual structure comprising an international research infrastructure and its host institution. The role is designed as a coordinating and steering function: bringing together diverse funding streams, ensuring transparency, and providing robust financial insights to support decision-making at leadership level.

Key responsibilities:

  • Overall responsibility for the finance function, including professional leadership and development of a small team
  • Ensuring proper accounting, payment processes, and preparation of annual financial statements across both organisational entities
  • Managing and further developing financial controlling, reporting, and planning processes
  • Integrating and aligning different funding structures (e.g. membership contributions, EU grants, institutional funding) into a coherent financial framework
  • Preparing financial analyses, forecasts, and reports for management board and council
  • Coordinating budget planning and enhancing financial steering mechanisms across both structures
  • Ensuring forward-looking liquidity management, considering diverse funding conditions and timelines
  • Preparing and supporting external audits and acting as the primary contact for funding bodies
  • Translating regulatory requirements into practical and reliable financial processes

Your profile:

  • University degree in finance, business administration, or a comparable field
  • Several years of relevant experience in financial management, ideally within an international, scientific, or publicly funded environment
  • Proven ability to work with complex funding structures (e.g. third-party funding, EU programmes, institutional financing)
  • Experience in leading or functionally guiding small teams
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills combined with a solid understanding of organisational processes
  • A solid understanding of funding regulations and tax law
  • Structured, self-reliant working style and confidence in an international settingExcellent English and German language skills
  • Willingness and ability to quickly familiarise with new fields of work and the complex structure of SHARE as a transnational panel study and European research infrastructure
